Summer is the perfect season for hosting guests. Who doesn’t want to get everyone together for an event full of games, food and conversation?
Before you send out invitations, though, you’ll want to make sure safety is a priority. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue, a pool party or some other fun gathering, you should consider these points to keep your guests safe.
- Stock up on sun supplies. The sun can cause issues — especially with prolonged exposure. Make sure you stock up on sun protection before hosting guests, including sunblock, large umbrellas for shade, sunglasses and fans to keep everyone cool.
- Walk your property. Before having people over, walk the interior and exterior of your home for potential hazards. Are there any plants that may be toxic to pets or young children? What about exposed wires or trip hazards? If you have a swimming pool, keep kids safe by ensuring that it’s surrounded by a fence with a secure lock.
- Keep guests hydrated. Stock up on water, electrolyte drinks, popsicles and hydrating snacks like watermelon before having guests over to enjoy your outdoor space. Keep drinks in a cooler with ice, or get a mini fridge to keep on the patio.
- Remember fire and food safety. Don’t grill too close to trees and structures, and make sure pets and young children keep their distance from your grill or fire pit. Additionally, make sure you cook the food thoroughly, and don’t let it sit out for more than a couple of hours.
- Brush up on water safety. If you’re throwing a pool party, make sure you talk to everyone about water safety and pool rules. You can also buy floaties and life vests for your guests to use.
